A Pirouette with a Vengeance

Friday night Boyd went to a YSA activity at Classic Fun Center. He was so excited about this activity because there was unlimited skating and lazer tagging, plus all the pizza and soda you could eat. Boyd tried to get me to go skating but I declined, saying that I didn't want to damage my ankle. I then got in a conversation with someone and didn't notice that Boyd had gotten skates on and was skating around the rink. Soon after, I saw the bishop and he said that he thought Boyd was a victim of an injury. I looked over and saw Boyd sitting on the side of the rink. I walked over and he said that he had fallen and really hurt his ankle.
We waited for awhile hoping that his ankle would feel better, and it didn't. Boyd finally decided that he needed to go to the Emergency Room. We went to McKay Dee hospital and they promptly admitted him and did x-rays. What we found was that Boyd had a spiral fracture on his smaller leg bone but worse than that, he had torn all the ligaments away from his larger leg bone, thus requiring him to have surgery.
The doctor wrapped his foot in a splint and sent us home with heavy pain meds. Fortunately for us on Monday morning we were able to get an appointment with a fabulous orthopedic doctor, Dr. Richter. He told Boyd he could do surgery on him on Tuesday morning.
One of the Young Single Adults saw Boyd go down at the skating rink and he said that Boyd did a pirouette with a vengeance!

Boyd at Classic Fun Center with ice on his foot. He knew it was bad but was hoping that he wouldn't need to go to the doctor.

Boyd's foot is now ensconsed in a huge splint which is nice because it buffers the movement around him.

More info later.

Now you see them, now you don't!!!!

Well, the momentous day has finally arrived. After several months of being told that her braces were due to come off soon, Alyssa went to the orthodontist this past week and had the rest of her braces removed. She is so happy. She said that she can actually eat a sandwich without tearing it...she can bite into it and it will break. I have to admit that Drs. Poole and Willis did a wonderful job.

Alyssa very reluctantly let me take this snap of her during her last minutes of being braced.

A quick picture of Alyssa without her braces. Lovely!

Valentine's Dance

Last week the junior high had a Valentine's dance. Alyssa and Jenny made plans of how they were going to prepare. They decided to get up at 5:00 A.M. (yes a.m.) and begin curling each other's hair. I came down at 5:30 to see if they woke up and they were sitting side by side on the floor in front of the TV watching a movie and curling their hair. It was adorable to see. I sure hope they have fun.

Alyssa helping Jenny finish her hair.

The final product--two beauties ready to impress the guys!

Note: yes, they did have fun. I guess getting up at 5:00 a.m. and all the hair curling was worth the effort.

The Dairyman

Court went into work one day a couple of weeks ago and was informed that he was going to get promoted to be in dairy. Basically that means that you spend your entire shift checking to make sure the dairy product cases are full, and then you go into the back and fill the cases. It's a very busy job and Court says that the time goes by super fast.
He likes the change of pace at work, plus the raise ain't bad, either!!

Peeking through from the front to the back where Court is.

Helping Dale with the cheese.

My favorite lines..........................................

Just thought you would all like to read a few of my favorite lines from "Guernsey Literature and Potato Peel Pie Society"...

"Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true."

"Do you remember that afternoon in Leeds when we speculated on the possible reasons why Markham V. Reynolds, Junior, was obliged to remain a man of mystery? It's very disappointing, but we were completely wrong. He's not married. He's certainly not bashful. He doesn't have a disfiguring scar that causes him to shun daylight. He doesn't seem to be a werewolf (no fur on his knuckles, anyway)."

"The response was so vociferous Isola Pribby, our Sergeant-at-Arms, was forced to bang her hammer for order (I admit that Isola needs little encouragement to bang her hammer)."

"I do not have a pleasing appearance. My nose is big and was broken when I fell off the hen-house roof. One eyeball skitters up to the top, and my hair is wild and will not stay tamped down. I am tall and built of big bones."

"What a blight that woman is. Do you happen to know why? I lean toward a malignant fairy at her christening."

"Maybe I am a complete idiot. I know of three women who are mad for him--he'll be snapped up in a trice, and I'll spend my declining years in a grimy bed-sit, with my teeth falling out one by one."

"Elizabeth broke out of our line fast--so fast. She grabbed the rod from Binta's hand and turned it upon her, hitting her over and over. Guards came running and two of them struck Elizabeth to the ground with their rifles. They threw her into a truck and took her again to the punishment bunker."

"A sunny nature? A light heart? I have never been so insulted. Light-hearted is a short step from witless in my book. A cackling buffoon--that's what I am to Dawsey."

"If that is not enough, there's a sub-title: Phrenology: the Science of Interpreting Bumps on the Head."

"You too can learn to read Head Bumps! Stun your friends, confound your enemies with Indisputable knowledge of their human faculties or lack of them."

Well, I think that is enough. I hope that I have given you a small snippet of the delight that awaits you in reading this novel. Just a quick note: it is set right after WWII on the Guerney Island. It tells of the German occupation of that island during the war and events that happened that forever shaped the lives of the people who lived there. It is heart-wrenching at times and yet the overall tone is so happy and positive.
When he found out how much I enjoyed this book, my thoughtful husband went to Barnes and Noble and ordered me my very own copy. What a guy!!

New Love

Yes, it's true. I have found a new love - a book called "Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". Kalie recommended it to me when she came over Christmas. How good can it be?, I thought to myself. I put my name on the waiting list at the library and last week I was able to pick it up. When I opened it and discovered that it was a novel composed of letters from different people to each other, I was less than enchanted. However, my curiosity got the best of me and I began the discovery process. What I found is a book rich in delight, character development and love. I want Juliet to be my new friend.

Read it! You'll love it.

A picture of my newest love..........isn't it wonderful?

A Bright Moment

I forgot to mention that there was a bright moment on Saturday afternoon. We went out to a japanese restaurant for lunch and had sushi and sashimi. I know that there are alot of people who don't like seafood at all but I happen to enjoy it. Sushi is a completely different experience which I find quite delightful. The only problem for me is that I could eat an entire roll of sushi and feel like it was just an appetizer. I ordered a Salmon Teriyaki platter and after that and a couple of pieces of sushi, I was full. So delicious!!

Sushi, anyone?

A platter of sashimi.

Taxes, taxes, and more taxes!!!

Saturday we spent the entire day working on personal and business taxes. We met with our accountant (who is our sister-in-law) and she helped us sort through the terrible mess called TAXES. Thank goodness she knows what she is doing.
We aren't quite done; she needs a little more information from us but I am grateful that I don't have to figure out the complicated forms and payments.
The best part of all is that we got our W-2 and 1099 forms filled out, printed and mailed by the deadline of yesterday. Yay!!

A dizzying array of tax forms, designed to confuse and frighten even the most stalwart.

Picture my face instead of his and you will see how I felt on Saturday night.
